BV Holdings Agro supplies Cameroon dried chili to spice importers, sauce makers and food factories. We offer small bird’s eye chili and larger chili types, dried whole. Farmers pick ripe red pods, then sun-dry them before we sort and bag each lot.

Chili grows widely in Cameroon, where people call it “piment”. Our lots come mainly from the West, Littoral, Centre and North regions. Because the climate varies across these zones, we can source lots with different heat levels. In short, tell us your target heat and we match the lot.

This page explains where Cameroon dried chili grows, typical specs, types, checks, packing, documents and ordering. It covers what you need before you ask for an offer. See our spices range for more.

Where Cameroon dried chili is grown

Chili is part of daily cooking in Cameroon, so farmers grow it in almost every region. For export, the main supply comes from four zones. The West highlands have cooler nights and rich soils. Meanwhile, the Littoral and Centre regions are hot and humid, and the North is hot and dry for much of the year.

Most chili grows on small family plots. Farmers sow seed in nurseries, then plant out seedlings when the rains start. Plants begin to fruit after about three months and keep cropping for several months. As a result, harvests are spread out, and supply can run through much of the year.

Local demand is strong, because chili goes into almost every Cameroonian dish. Traders buy fresh and dried pods in rural markets and move them to towns. For export, we work with groups and aggregators who sort and dry for the export trade. This keeps Cameroon dried chili for export apart from mixed market produce.

Drying conditions differ by zone. In the North, the long dry season gives strong sun and low humidity, which suits sun-drying. In the wetter south, growers often dry on raised racks or tarpaulins to keep pods off damp ground. Good drying is vital, because slow drying raises mould and aflatoxin risk.

We buy dried lots in the regions and move them to covered warehouses. There, bags sit on pallets, off the ground, until we sample and test them. So Cameroon dried chili reaches the port sorted and checked. Our Cameroon harvest calendar shows the wider crop year.

Final specifications are confirmed in each contract and verified before loading. Heat and colour change with each harvest, so we test before we offer. Many buyers also refer to the ISO standard for chillies, ISO 972, or to their own rules. Our quality control page explains our checks.

Types of Cameroon dried chili and how to choose

We offer two main types. Also, both come stem-on or stemless.

  • Bird’s eye chili: small, very hot pods for hot sauce, chili oil and spice blends.
  • Long chili: larger pods with milder heat and good colour for flakes and powder.
  • Stem-on: pods dried with the green cap and stalk, the standard and most economical form.
  • Stemless: caps and stalks removed by hand, ready for grinding or direct use.

How do you choose? Start with heat and colour. If you make hot sauce or chili oil, bird’s eye pods give the most heat per kilo. If you need colour for seasonings or snacks, long chili gives a deeper red with gentler heat.

Next, decide on stems. Stemless pods cost more, because the stems come off by hand. However, they save work at your plant and lower foreign matter in your grind. Many grinders therefore buy stemless Cameroon dried chili, while traders often buy stem-on.

Finally, set a heat range in Scoville heat units (SHU). Heat varies with variety, region and weather. So we test each lot and offer a range, rather than promise a fixed figure. You then approve the sample before signing.

Colour is the last point. Long chili with deep red skin scores higher on ASTA colour, which measures extractable red pigment. If colour drives your price, ask for an ASTA result on the offered lot. Meanwhile, bird’s eye buyers usually rank heat and clean pods above colour.

Quality control before loading

Every lot passes five checkpoints. First, we buy in the region from known producer groups and aggregators. Second, we dry and store the chili at target moisture in covered warehouses, off the ground. Third, we sample and test against your contract spec.

Fourth, we clean, sort and pack in new export-marked bags or cartons with a lot number. Finally, independent inspection and fumigation take place where required, and we load at Douala or Kribi. This chain lets us trace each bag of Cameroon dried chili back to its lot.

So what do we check? Moisture is first, because damp pods mould quickly in a closed box. Next, we look at colour, pod size and broken pods. We also check foreign matter, such as stalks, leaves, stones and dust. Then we sort out pale, spotted or insect-damaged pods by hand.

Lab tests can go further on request. An independent lab can test heat (SHU), ASTA colour, aflatoxin, ochratoxin A, pesticide residues and microbes. Some buyers also ask for tests for illegal dyes, such as Sudan dyes. These tests give your quality team proof of a natural lot. They also help you meet any extra checks your border authority applies to chili.

You may also nominate your own inspection company, such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek or Cotecna. Their surveyor then samples the lot before it leaves the warehouse. Results travel with the shipping documents.

Common defects are easy to spot. Mouldy pods show white or black patches inside. Pale or yellow pods point to early picking or sun bleaching. Meanwhile, holes and powder mean insect damage. We remove these, so the loaded lot of Cameroon dried chili matches the approved sample.

Uses and industries for Cameroon dried chili

Dried chili is one of the most used spices in the world. Buyers of Cameroon dried chili usually fall into these groups:

  • Hot sauce and chili oil makers: use bird’s eye pods for strong, clean heat.
  • Spice grinders: mill pods into chili powder and flakes near their market.
  • Seasoning and snack firms: add heat and red colour to crisps, nuts and coatings.
  • Ready-meal and meat plants: use chili in sauces, marinades and sausages.
  • Extract plants: make oleoresin capsicum for food colour and heat.
  • African food importers: supply diaspora shops that want familiar West African chili.

Heat comes from capsaicin, which sits mostly in the pale pith inside the pod. Meanwhile, the red colour comes from natural carotenoids. Buyers who want heat focus on SHU, while colour buyers focus on ASTA colour values.

West African chili also has a loyal following abroad. Many diaspora shops and caterers want the flavour they know from home. So Cameroon dried chili suits importers who serve African, Caribbean and Asian food markets, as well as mainstream spice buyers.

Our core supply is whole dried pods. We do not sell ground spice blends. Most buyers grind close to market, which keeps colour bright and lets them control mesh and microbes. For single-spice ground cayenne on request, see our cayenne pepper page.

Packaging, loading and container capacity

We pack Cameroon dried chili in 10–25 kg polypropylene bags or pressed cartons, or as agreed. Each bag or carton carries export marks and a lot number. Liners can be added where your spec requires them.

Whole dried chili is light and bulky. So a container fills by volume long before it reaches its weight limit. Pressed bales and cartons fit more weight into each box. For this reason, load weight depends on type, stem and packing, and we state it in each offer.

In addition, we keep lots dry and shaded before loading, because strong light fades the red colour of Cameroon dried chili over time. We line container walls with kraft paper and add desiccants to cut condensation at sea. Fumigation is carried out where your contract or the destination requires it.

Mixed loads are possible too. For example, you can combine Cameroon dried chili with black pepper, ginger or turmeric in one container. We load at Douala or Kribi and quote FOB, CFR or CIF. Our FOB vs CIF guide explains the difference.

Export documents and compliance for Cameroon dried chili

Each load ships with a full set of export papers. These usually include:

  • Commercial invoice and packing list.
  • Bill of lading.
  • Phytosanitary certificate from MINADER plant protection services.
  • Certificate of origin.
  • Weight and quality certificate from the agreed inspection company.
  • Fumigation certificate, where required.
  • Lab reports for mycotoxins, residues, dyes or microbes, where agreed.

Rules differ by destination, so we check them at the offer stage. For example, the EU sets maximum residue levels for pesticides. It also limits aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in chili and other Capsicum spices. The UK applies similar rules. In addition, the US requires food facility registration and prior notice, which your importer files.

Many buyers also follow cleanliness specs from the American Spice Trade Association or the European Spice Association. Others ask that lots are not treated with ethylene oxide, which the EU does not allow on food. We can write such points into the contract.

Whole dried chili moves under HS 0904.21, as set out in the WCO Harmonized System. Crushed or ground product falls under HS 0904.22. Your customs broker should confirm the tariff line and duty for your country.

Traceability supports all of this. Each bag carries a lot number, and each lot links to its buying region and test results. So if your authority asks where a shipment came from, you have a clear answer on paper.

How pricing works

We price Cameroon dried chili per 20ft or 40ft container. Every offer is made for a set lot and shipment date. We do not publish a price list, because chili prices move with the market.

India and China are major chili producers, so their crops set the tone for world prices. However, local factors matter just as much. Crop size, weather during drying and strong home demand in Cameroon all affect what is on hand for export.

Seasonal swings are common. When home demand peaks, less Cameroon dried chili is free for export, and offers firm up. Later, as new crop dries, supply eases again. For this reason, we keep offer validity short and confirm stock by sample.

Your spec also shapes the offer. Stemless pods, high heat targets, strict colour limits and extra lab tests all raise the value. Pressed packing and third-party inspection add cost as well.

Finally, the Incoterm changes the figure. FOB covers goods to the ship, CFR adds freight, and CIF adds freight and insurance. Payment terms are agreed per contract. Because the CFA franc is pegged to the euro, euro and dollar moves can also shift offers made in US dollars.

FAQ: Cameroon dried chili

How hot is Cameroon dried chili?

Bird’s eye lots usually test at 50,000–100,000 SHU. Long chili is milder and is chosen more for colour. However, heat varies by variety, region and harvest, so we confirm it per lot. On request, an independent lab tests SHU before loading, and the result goes with the shipping papers. You can then repeat the test at destination.

Do you supply stem-on or stemless pods?

We supply both. Stem-on pods are the standard form and cost less. Stemless pods cost more, because the stems come off by hand. However, they save work at your plant and lower foreign matter in the finished grind. We agree the stem limit in the contract and check it on the pre-shipment sample.

What is the minimum order?

Our minimum order is one 20ft container. We can also ship chili with other spices in one load, such as black pepper or ginger. Load weight depends on type and packing, so we state it in each offer. We do not sell retail or small parcel quantities.

Do you sell chili powder?

Our core supply of Cameroon dried chili is whole pods. We do not sell ground spice blends. Single-spice ground cayenne may be offered on request, subject to spec and testing. Most buyers prefer to grind at destination, which keeps colour bright and gives them control of mesh and microbes.

Can you test for aflatoxin and illegal dyes?

Yes, on request. An independent lab can test for aflatoxin, ochratoxin A, pesticide residues, microbes and illegal dyes such as Sudan dyes. We match the tests to your destination rules. The reports then travel with the shipping documents, and you may appoint your own inspection company as well.

How is Cameroon dried chili packed?

We pack it in 10–25 kg polypropylene bags or pressed cartons, or as agreed. Pressed cartons fit more weight into each container. In addition, we line container walls with kraft paper and add desiccants. Each bag or carton carries export marks and a lot number for traceability. We keep the packed lots shaded until loading.

When is Cameroon dried chili available?

Chili crops over several months, and growing zones span the humid south and the dry North. As a result, supply can run through much of the year. However, volumes and heat levels change with the season. So we confirm current stock, type and heat range with every inquiry.

Which ports and Incoterms do you offer?

We load at Douala or Kribi. Offers can be FOB at the loading port, or CFR or CIF to your port of discharge. CIF includes minimum cargo insurance. Also, on CFR and CIF terms, our team books freight and shares the shipping schedule with you before loading.
