BV Holdings Agro exports Cameroon dried turmeric as fingers and bulbs for spice grinders, extract makers and food firms. Growers lift the rhizomes once the leaves turn dry. Then they boil, dry and sort them. As a result, the rhizomes keep a deep yellow colour and store well in transit.

Our lots come from smallholder farms in the West, North-West and Littoral regions. The FAO publishes post-harvest advice for spices such as turmeric, and we follow the same basic steps. So we cure each lot, dry it to a safe moisture and clean it before bagging.

This page explains how Cameroon dried turmeric is grown, cured and graded. It also covers our checks, packing, export papers and ordering steps. In addition, it shows how Cameroon dried turmeric can sit beside other spices in one mixed load. For other origin spices, see our spices category.

Where Cameroon dried turmeric is grown

Turmeric likes warm, wet weather and loose, well-drained soil. Cameroon offers both. The West and North-West highlands have rich volcanic soils and long rains. Meanwhile, the Littoral region, including the Moungo valley, adds a hot and humid lowland zone.

Most turmeric here grows on small family plots. Farmers often plant it beside maize, beans, cocoyams or plantain. They set seed rhizomes at the start of the rains, then weed and mulch by hand. The crop is ready seven to ten months later, once the leaves yellow and dry.

Harvest is manual. Growers dig up the clumps, shake off the soil and split the side fingers from the round mother bulbs. Because timing follows the local rains, harvest windows shift a little each year. For this reason, we confirm current stock of Cameroon dried turmeric with every inquiry.

After harvest, collectors bring the rhizomes to drying points in each region. We then buy cured and dried lots and move them to covered warehouses. There, bags sit on pallets, off the ground, until we sample and test them. Our Cameroon harvest calendar shows the wider crop year.

How turmeric is cured and dried

Curing is what turns a fresh rhizome into a stable spice. First, growers wash the fingers and bulbs. Next, they boil them in water until they turn soft and give off a typical aroma. This step sets the colour, kills the living tissue and helps the rhizome dry evenly.

Then the cured rhizomes dry in the sun on mats, racks or clean floors. Drying usually takes ten to fifteen days, depending on sun and humidity. Growers turn the pieces often, so they dry on all sides. At the end, dried turmeric is hard and breaks with a sharp, metallic snap.

Finally, some lots go through polishing. Workers rub or tumble the dried fingers to remove rough skin and roots. As a result, the surface looks smoother and brighter. Polished Cameroon dried turmeric is often preferred by buyers who sell whole fingers or want a cleaner grind.

Final specifications are confirmed in each contract and verified before loading. Many buyers base their spec on the ISO standard for turmeric, ISO 5562, or on their own market rules. We can add curcumin, aflatoxin or lead tests through an independent lab on request. Read more on our quality control page.

Grades and forms of Cameroon dried turmeric

Turmeric trades in two main shapes. In addition, buyers choose between a rough or polished finish. So there are four basic options.

  • Fingers: the side rhizomes. They grind evenly, so most powder makers buy fingers.
  • Bulbs: the round mother rhizomes. They suit extract plants and buyers who blend grades.
  • Polished: we rub off the rough outer skin for a cleaner, brighter look.
  • Unpolished: dried as cured, with a natural skin, for buyers who clean in-house.

How do you choose? Start with your end use. Powder makers usually want fingers, because they mill to a fine, even colour. Extract plants often accept bulbs, since they care most about curcumin and solvent yield. Meanwhile, whole-spice packers prefer polished fingers, which look best in retail packs.

We sort fingers and bulbs into separate lots of Cameroon dried turmeric. That way, you pay only for the shape you need. If you want a blend, we agree the ratio in the contract. For example, a finger lot may allow up to 5% bulbs, while a mixed lot sets its own ratio.

Curcumin is the other key choice. It gives turmeric its colour and much of its value. Cameroon lots typically test at 2–4%, but each crop differs. Therefore, if curcumin drives your price, ask for a lab result on the offered lot before you sign.

Quality control before loading

Every lot passes the same five checkpoints. First, we buy in the region from known producer groups and aggregators. Second, we dry and store the turmeric at target moisture in covered warehouses. Third, we sample and test against your contract spec.

Fourth, we clean, sort and pack in new export-marked bags with a lot number. Finally, independent inspection and fumigation take place where required, and we load at Douala or Kribi. So each bag of Cameroon dried turmeric can be traced back to its lot.

Moisture comes first, because damp turmeric can mould in a closed container. Next, we check foreign matter, such as soil, stones and root hairs. We also look for insect damage, mould and light or hollow pieces. Then we compare colour and snap against the approved sample.

Common defects are easy to spot once you know them. Under-cured pieces look dull and break with a soft, fibrous edge. Mouldy pieces show grey patches. Meanwhile, light or hollow fingers point to poor curing or a weak crop. We sort these out by hand, so the loaded lot of Cameroon dried turmeric matches the approved sample.

Lab tests can go further on request. An independent lab can test curcumin, ash, aflatoxin, lead and pesticide residues. Lead testing matters to many buyers, because some world markets have seen turmeric coloured with lead chromate. A clean lab result gives your quality team proof of a natural, unadulterated lot.

You may also nominate your own inspection company, such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek or Cotecna. Their surveyor then samples the lot before it leaves the warehouse. Results travel with the shipping documents.

Uses and industries for Cameroon dried turmeric

Turmeric is both a spice and a natural colour. As a result, buyers of Cameroon dried turmeric come from several industries.

  • Spice grinders and packers: mill fingers into turmeric powder for retail and catering.
  • Curry and seasoning makers: use turmeric as a base for curry powder and spice mixes.
  • Food colour makers: extract a natural yellow colour for sauces, dairy, snacks and drinks.
  • Curcumin extract plants: produce concentrated curcumin for food and other uses.
  • Dye and craft users: use turmeric as a traditional plant dye for textiles.
  • Importers and traders: buy container loads to resell to the groups above.

Demand for natural colours has grown, because many food firms want to replace synthetic dyes. Turmeric is one of the main options for bright yellow. For this reason, curcumin content and colour strength are now as important as flavour for many buyers.

Drinks are a growing use as well. Turmeric lattes, herbal teas and wellness shots all need a clean, bright root. So drinks makers often ask for polished fingers with low ash. If you supply this market, Cameroon dried turmeric with a lab-tested curcumin figure gives you a clear story for your own buyers.

Most of these buyers grind at destination. Local milling keeps the colour bright and lets them control mesh and microbial treatment. Therefore, whole fingers and bulbs remain our core supply. We do not sell ground spice blends.

Packaging, loading and container capacity

We pack Cameroon dried turmeric in new jute or polypropylene bags of 25–50 kg, or as agreed. Liners can be added where your spec requires them. Each bag carries export marks and a lot number.

A 20ft container takes about 12–15 tonnes, while the final weight depends on form and bag size. Fingers pack more densely than bulbs, so finger lots usually load heavier. A 40ft container carries more, subject to weight limits, and we confirm the figure in each offer.

Moisture at sea is the main risk. Therefore, we line container walls with kraft paper and add desiccants. We also check that every bag of Cameroon dried turmeric is dry and sound before loading. Fumigation is carried out where your contract or the destination requires it.

We load at Douala or Kribi and quote FOB, CFR or CIF. FOB suits buyers with their own freight contracts. CFR and CIF suit buyers who want us to book the ship. Our FOB vs CIF guide explains the difference.

Export documents and compliance for Cameroon dried turmeric

Each load ships with a full set of export papers. These usually include:

  • Commercial invoice and packing list.
  • Bill of lading.
  • Phytosanitary certificate from MINADER plant protection services.
  • Certificate of origin.
  • Weight and quality certificate from the agreed inspection company.
  • Fumigation certificate, where required.
  • Lab reports for curcumin, aflatoxin, lead or residues, where agreed.

Rules for Cameroon dried turmeric depend on the destination. For example, the EU sets maximum residue levels for pesticides. It also limits aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in spices, turmeric included. The UK applies similar rules. In addition, the US requires food facility registration and prior notice, which your importer files.

Some buyers also follow cleanliness specs from trade bodies, such as the American Spice Trade Association. Others ask that lots are not treated with ethylene oxide, which the EU does not allow on food. We can write such points into the contract. Tell us your market rules early, and we build the right tests into the offer.

How pricing works

We price Cameroon dried turmeric per 20ft or 40ft container. Every offer is made for a set lot and shipment date. We do not publish a price list, because turmeric prices move with the world market.

India grows most of the world’s turmeric, so the Indian crop sets the tone for global prices. A large Indian harvest tends to soften prices, while a short one lifts them. Local factors matter too, such as crop size in Cameroon and the season.

Your spec for Cameroon dried turmeric also shapes the offer. Fingers usually cost more than bulbs, and polished lots cost more than unpolished. A high curcumin target narrows the lots we can offer. Extra lab tests, special packing and third-party inspection add cost as well.

Finally, the Incoterm changes the figure. FOB covers goods to the ship, CFR adds freight, and CIF adds freight and insurance. Payment terms are agreed per contract. Currency plays a part too. The CFA franc is pegged to the euro, so moves between the euro and the dollar can shift offers made in US dollars. In short, a clear spec gets you a faster and sharper offer.

FAQ: Cameroon dried turmeric

Do you sell fingers and bulbs as separate lots?

Yes. We sort fingers and bulbs apart, so you can buy either grade or an agreed blend. Finger lots usually allow up to 5% bulbs, while blends follow the ratio in your contract. Tell us how you process the turmeric. Then we suggest the shape and finish that suit your line best, and we send a sample to confirm it.

Can you test curcumin in Cameroon dried turmeric?

Yes. On request, an independent lab tests curcumin before loading. Cameroon lots typically test at 2–4%, but values vary by crop and region. So we test the offered lot rather than quote a fixed figure. The results then go with the shipping documents, and you can repeat the test at destination.

What is the minimum order?

Our minimum order is one 20ft container, which holds about 12–15 tonnes of turmeric. We also quote 40ft loads and repeat contracts. We do not sell retail or small parcel quantities. However, you can combine turmeric with ginger or other spices in one container if volumes allow.

Is Cameroon dried turmeric polished or unpolished?

We offer both finishes. Polished fingers have the rough skin and root ends rubbed off, so they look smoother and brighter. Unpolished lots keep the natural skin and suit buyers who clean or grind in-house. Polishing adds a step, so it is reflected in the offer price.

Do you test for lead and other contaminants?

Yes, on request. An independent lab can test for lead, aflatoxin, ochratoxin A and pesticide residues. Many buyers now ask for lead tests, because adulteration with lead chromate has been found in some markets. We match the tests to your destination rules, and the reports travel with the shipping papers.

Do you sell turmeric powder?

Our core supply is whole dried fingers and bulbs. We do not sell ground spice blends. Most buyers grind at destination, because fresh milling keeps colour strong and lets them control mesh and microbial treatment. If you have a special need, describe it in your inquiry and we will tell you what we can supply.

How do you protect Cameroon dried turmeric from moisture in transit?

We dry each lot to about 10% moisture and test it before bagging. Then we use new, sound bags and line the container with kraft paper. In addition, we add desiccants to reduce condensation at sea. As a result, the risk of mould and caking drops on the long voyage. We also avoid loading in heavy rain where the schedule allows.

Is your turmeric certified organic?

No. We do not claim organic, Fairtrade or similar certification for our turmeric. Many smallholders who grow Cameroon dried turmeric use few inputs. However, we only state what we can document. Instead, we offer lab tests for pesticide residues and other limits, so you can check each lot against your own market rules.
