BV Holdings Agro supplies Cameroon dried ginger in split and whole form to spice grinders, extract plants and importers. We buy from smallholder growers and producer groups, then clean, sort and dry each lot before export. Fresh ginger is also available on request, subject to season and reefer space.

Cameroon dried ginger has a sharp aroma and a strong, clean bite. For this reason, buyers use it for powder, oleoresin, tea blends and soft drinks. Most lots come from the West, Littoral and Centre regions, where rich soils and steady rain suit the crop.

This page sets out what you can expect from Cameroon dried ginger: where it grows, typical specs, grades, checks, packing, documents and how to order. In short, it covers the points a buyer needs before asking for an offer. You can also browse our full spices range for other Cameroon spices.

Where Cameroon dried ginger is grown

Ginger grows well in Cameroon’s humid zones. The main supply areas are the Littoral region, mostly in the Moungo division, plus the West and Centre regions. Farms are small, often one hectare or less, and growers plant ginger next to food crops such as cassava and maize.

Growers plant seed pieces of rhizome at the start of the rains. The crop then needs eight to ten months to mature. Once the leaves yellow and dry, farmers lift the rhizomes by hand. In Cameroon, the main ginger harvest runs from about December to March, so this is when fresh supply peaks.

After harvest, the rhizomes are washed and trimmed. Next, growers or collectors slice them lengthwise for split ginger, or leave them whole. Then the pieces dry in the sun on raised racks, tarpaulins or clean concrete floors. Drying takes about one to two weeks, while the exact time depends on sun and humidity. This simple step turns fresh rhizomes into Cameroon dried ginger.

Location helps too. Many Littoral farms sit a short drive from Douala port, so inland transport is short. Meanwhile, lots from the West and Centre travel by road to our collection points. Kribi, a deep-water port in the South region, gives a second loading option.

We buy dried lots in the region and move them to covered warehouses. There, bags sit on pallets, off the ground, until we sample and test them. As a result, Cameroon dried ginger reaches the port already sorted and checked. For the full crop year, see our Cameroon harvest calendar.

Final specifications are confirmed in each contract and verified before loading. Many buyers base their spec on the ISO standard for ginger, ISO 1003, or on their own market rules. In addition, we can add lab tests for aflatoxin, pesticide residues or volatile oil when your market needs them. See how we sample lots on our quality control page.

Grades and forms: how to choose

We offer three main forms. Each one suits a different buyer, so tell us your end use first. Then we can match the lot to your line.

  • Dried split ginger: rhizomes sliced lengthwise, then sun-dried. It dries faster and grinds easily, so most grinders prefer it.
  • Dried whole ginger: whole hands, dried with the skin on or lightly scraped. It suits buyers who cut, slice or extract in-house.
  • Fresh ginger (on request): washed rhizomes for the fresh trade, shipped in reefer containers when the season allows.

Split ginger is the most common choice for Cameroon dried ginger buyers. Because the cut face is open, the slices dry evenly and reach a safe moisture sooner. As a result, mould risk drops and the colour stays light. Grinders also like it, since slices feed into mills with less pre-cutting.

Whole Cameroon dried ginger, by contrast, keeps more of its volatile oil in the dried rhizome. So oleoresin and essential oil plants often ask for it. It also suits buyers who slice or flake to their own size. However, whole hands take longer to dry, so we check moisture closely on these lots.

Within each form, buyers often set a size or piece grade. For example, some ask for bold pieces with few small bits. Others accept mixed sizes for grinding. In short, tell us how you process the ginger and we suggest the right grade before we send a sample.

Quality control before loading

Every lot of Cameroon dried ginger passes the same five checkpoints. First, we buy in the region from known groups and aggregators. Second, we dry and store the ginger at target moisture in covered warehouses, off the ground. Third, we sample and test against your contract spec.

Fourth, we clean, sort and pack the lot in new export-marked bags with a lot number. Finally, independent inspection and fumigation take place where required, and we load at Douala or Kribi. This chain lets us trace each bag back to its lot.

So what do we test? Moisture is the first check, because wet ginger moulds in a closed box at sea. We also check foreign matter, such as stones, soil and stalks. Next, we look for mould, insect damage and shrivelled or dark pieces. Then we compare colour and aroma against the approved sample.

Lab tests can go further on request. For instance, an independent lab can test Cameroon dried ginger for volatile oil, ash, aflatoxin and pesticide residues. Results then travel with the shipping documents. You can also nominate your own inspection company, such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek or Cotecna. In that case, their surveyor samples the lot before it leaves the warehouse.

Common defects in dried ginger are easy to spot once you know them. Mouldy pieces show grey or green patches. Insect damage shows as small holes and powder. Meanwhile, dark or burnt slices point to poor drying. We sort these out by hand, so the lot you receive matches the sample you approved.

Uses and industries for Cameroon dried ginger

Dried ginger is one of the most traded spices in the world. Buyers of Cameroon dried ginger usually fall into five groups, and each one looks for something slightly different.

  • Spice grinders and packers: mill split ginger into powder for retail jars, catering packs and spice blends.
  • Oleoresin and essential oil plants: extract the pungent and aromatic parts for food flavour and other uses.
  • Tea and drinks makers: use cut ginger in herbal teas, ginger beer, ginger ale and health drinks.
  • Food manufacturers: add ginger to biscuits, sauces, ready meals, pickles and bakery goods.
  • Importers and traders: buy container loads to resell to the groups above in their home market.

Pungency and aroma drive most of these uses. Ginger’s bite comes mainly from gingerols, which turn partly into shogaols as the rhizome dries. For this reason, dried ginger tastes hotter and sharper than fresh. Extract buyers often ask about volatile oil, while grinders focus more on colour, ash and cleanliness.

West African ginger has a strong reputation for pungency. So many buyers blend it with milder origins to lift flavour in powders and drinks. Cameroon dried ginger fits this profile well. If you need a set strength, ask for a lab test on the offered lot. Then you can compare it with your current supply before you commit.

Many buyers also grind and steam-treat at destination. Local milling keeps the aroma fresher, and steam treatment helps meet local microbial limits. For this reason, whole and split lots remain the core of the trade, while ground ginger is a smaller share.

Packaging, loading and container capacity

We pack Cameroon dried ginger in new jute or polypropylene bags of 25–50 kg, or as agreed. Liners can be added where your spec requires them. Each bag carries export marks and a lot number, so your warehouse can trace it.

A 20ft container usually carries about 10–13 tonnes of Cameroon dried ginger. The final load weight depends on form and bag size, because whole hands pack less densely than slices. A 40ft container takes more, subject to weight limits, and we confirm the figure in each offer.

Moisture at sea is the main risk for any dried spice. Therefore, we line container walls with kraft paper and add desiccants to cut condensation. We also check that bags are dry and sound before they go in. Fumigation is carried out where your contract or the destination requires it.

We ship from Douala or Kribi on FOB, CFR or CIF terms. FOB suits buyers with their own freight deals. CFR and CIF suit buyers who want us to book the ship, and CIF adds minimum cargo insurance. Our guide to FOB vs CIF explains the trade-offs.

Export documents and compliance for Cameroon dried ginger

Each load of Cameroon dried ginger ships with a full set of export papers. These usually include:

  • Commercial invoice and packing list.
  • Bill of lading.
  • Phytosanitary certificate from MINADER plant protection services.
  • Certificate of origin.
  • Weight and quality certificate from the agreed inspection company.
  • Fumigation certificate, where required.
  • Lab reports for aflatoxin, pesticide residues or microbes, where agreed.

Rules for Cameroon dried ginger differ by destination, so we check them at the offer stage. For example, the EU sets maximum residue levels for pesticides and limits for aflatoxins in spices, including ginger. The UK applies similar rules after Brexit. In addition, the US requires food facility registration and prior notice for food imports, which your importer files.

Many spice buyers also follow cleanliness specs, such as those set by the American Spice Trade Association. Others ask that lots are not treated with ethylene oxide, which the EU does not allow on food. We can write this point into the contract. Tell us your market rules early, and we build the right tests into the contract.

Ginger is classed under HS 0910.11 when whole, split or fresh. Crushed or ground ginger falls under HS 0910.12, as set out in the WCO Harmonized System. Our standard supply is whole or split, so most loads use 0910.11.

How pricing works

We price Cameroon dried ginger per 20ft or 40ft container, and every offer is made for a set lot and date. We do not publish a price list, because ginger prices move with the market. Instead, we quote after your inquiry.

Several factors shape each offer. First, world supply matters, since large crops in Asia and West Africa push prices down. Second, the local crop size and season affect what is on hand. Third, the form and grade change the price, so split, whole and bold grades differ.

Your chosen Incoterm also affects the figure. FOB covers the goods to the ship at Douala or Kribi. CFR adds sea freight, while CIF adds freight and insurance. Freight rates change often, so CFR and CIF offers have a shorter validity.

Extra tests, special packing and third-party inspection add cost too. Payment terms also play a part and are agreed per contract. Currency matters as well. The CFA franc is pegged to the euro, so euro and dollar moves can shift offers made in US dollars. In short, the clearer your spec, the sharper and faster our offer.

FAQ: Cameroon dried ginger

What is the minimum order for Cameroon dried ginger?

Our minimum order is one 20ft container, which holds about 10–13 tonnes of dried ginger. For larger needs, we also quote 40ft loads and multi-container contracts. We do not sell retail or small parcel quantities. However, you can mix ginger with other spices, such as turmeric, in one load if volumes allow.

Can I get a sample before I order?

Yes. After your inquiry, we send a written offer and a sample from current stock. You can then test it in your own lab or with a third party. Once you approve it, the sample becomes the reference for the contract. As a result, the loaded lot must match it before shipment.

Do you supply fresh ginger?

Yes, on request. However, fresh ginger depends on the harvest and on reefer container space at the port. So we confirm timing, packing and volume in the offer. Fresh supply peaks from about December to March. Outside that window, Cameroon dried ginger in split or whole form is the more reliable option for most buyers.

Is Cameroon dried ginger split or whole?

We supply both forms. Split ginger is sliced lengthwise before drying, so it dries faster and grinds easily. Whole ginger keeps the hand intact, which suits extract plants and buyers who cut in-house. Tell us your end use, and then we recommend the form and grade that fits your process best.

What moisture level do you ship at?

Our typical limit is 10–12% moisture, confirmed in each contract. We test moisture before bagging and again before loading. In addition, we line containers with kraft paper and add desiccants to reduce condensation at sea. If your market needs a lower figure, we agree it up front and verify it by test.

Can you test for aflatoxin and pesticide residues?

Yes. On request, an independent lab tests the lot for aflatoxin, pesticide residues, volatile oil or microbes. We match the tests to your destination rules, for example EU limits for spices. The reports then travel with the shipping documents. You may also appoint your own inspection company to sample the lot.

Which ports and Incoterms do you offer?

We load at Douala or Kribi, the two main ports of Cameroon. Offers can be FOB at the loading port, or CFR or CIF to your port of discharge. CIF includes minimum cargo insurance. Also, our team books freight on CFR and CIF terms and shares the shipping schedule with you.

Is Cameroon dried ginger certified organic?

No. We do not claim organic, Fairtrade or similar certification for our ginger. Many smallholders farm with few inputs. However, we only state what we can document. Instead, we offer lab tests for pesticide residues and other limits, so you can check each lot against your own market rules.
